"A Visual Magician." —The Paris Review
"I was the kid with the Polaroid Swinger," John Kane recalls — evoking the iconic white camera that arrived in 1965. His decades of experience stretch back, he says, "as long as I can remember," nurtured by an amateur photographer father and a rural Italian-American upbringing in Cheshire, Connecticut.
In his thirties, after a decade as a commercial photographer, he met the muses that would define his life's work: Pilobolus and MOMIX. He photographed Moses Pendleton's MOMIX extensively in the mid-'80s, then Robby Barnett's Pilobolus — both companies based not far from his Connecticut farm, where a photography studio filled an old cow barn.
"I am in awe of the dancers' capabilities. They can do things with their bodies most people can't. Capturing moments of time within the art form of dance — outside their choreographed pieces — becomes a collaborative expression."
In 2022, at 71, Kane moved to Cilento, Italy. Its dramatic contours, lambent light, and gentle folk became his new muse and home.
"Kane's transcendent images elevate viewers to a higher state of consciousness… a mind bending collection of photographs."
"A visual magician in the hills of Connecticut."
"A stunning visual feast."
